The Project

We’re looking for craftspeople, cultivators and characters of all kinds. People with a story to tell and not necessarily something to sell. People who create because they need to.

The word yokel has some pretty negative connotations, right? Back woods, uneducated, uncivilized. We all know that just because you‘re from an area with a small population doesn’t mean you’re any of those things. In fact, limited resources are fertile ground for creativity and innovation.

Yokel will feature fiction, interviews, poetry and art by local people, all put together in a magazine that looks classy AF. But hey, even though the finished piece will look professional and polished, doesn’t mean your content has to be. Anyone contributing can be their best weird self.

At this time, there are no plans to make Yokel a serial magazine. This is simply a personal project, culminating in a single-run publication.

What’s in it for contributors?

We wish we could pay a stipend for each submission used, but how about a nice shiny printed copy at the end of the project? We’ve submitted a grant application for printing costs, as well as an online version. If grant funding doesn’t come through, the online version will still be available and a professionally printed copy will be sent to each contributor.
